Ian graduated from Sheffield University in Electronic & Electrical Engineering in 1973. After working as a test engineer in the telecommunications industry, a design engineer on automatic test equipment and a Research Associate on antennas at Birmingham University, where he gained a MSc via part-time research, he joined British Aerospace, Military Aircraft in 1978 and an EMC Test Engineer.

Ian was technically responsible for the clearance of Tornado into service from an EMC point of view. He was responsible for the EMC and Lightning protection design and qualification of the Carbon Fibre Composite (CFC) Gripen wing for SAAB and the Experimental Aircraft Programme (EAP). He worked with others on the conceptual design of the EMH protection of Typhoon.

During the 90s he became the Electromagnetics Technologist – Consultant for Military Aircraft and gained an MBA via part-time study in order to increase his business awareness.
More recently he was responsible for the “Survivability” research programme from 2000 to 2003, following this he became the Head of the Electromagnetics Discipline for Military Air Solutions. He is responsible for Engineering Governance and Capability Management in the subject. This responsibility attempts to ensure that the correct processes, products, tools and skills are applied to all the engineering activity within MAS, in the field of Electromagnetics.

Within MAS the Discipline of Electromagetics covers, Electromagnetic Hazard (EMH) protection, installed antenna performance, Low Observability (LO), nuclear effects and the installed performance of EW systems.
