Working Life
I spent 11 years in the RAF as a Air Wireless mechanic/fitter, joining in 1958 as boy and spending 18 months in the Far East and my last 4 year at A&AEE Boscombe Down.
On leaving the RAF I went in to industry, initially as a service engineer and progressed into development work, for Racal and then became project engineer on the Nimrod Sonics Update Receiver for McMichael Ltd. This is where I first got involved in developing equipment to meet the then military EMC specifications.
I then spent a short time on the MRCA (Tornado) project for EASAMS where I got involved in the EMC testing of the HF Communication equipment, witnessing system EMC testing in both Italy & Germany on behalf of the system integration teams .
Following this I spent 5 year with Siemens Ltd as Project Manager of a the last teleprinter and interface contact for the Navy, moving on the do a similar job for Ameco Hydrospace supplying hydrophone arrays to the UK & Dutch Navy’s. It was with Ameco that I moved across to sales.
I then joined Dowty Maritime, selling marine electronic equipment, world wide and ended up as their Sales & Marketing Manager for the Marine Equipment division.
Following redundancy, I worked for myself for two yeasr as rep and did some management consultancy work, ending up going back on the bench for Surface Electronics Ltd, where I became their Test Manager. They specialised in Satellite TV tuners and LNB production, but unfortunately went into administration.
Following this I went back on the road selling Microwave Antennas for a short period, but again following redundancy, was offered the RFI Management role at Tecan, where I stayed for nearly 9 years, up until retirement. This was managing a business supplying metal RFI shielding structures to a wide variety of industries. I have had several articles published on the practical aspects of RFI. shielding. It was in this role that I became involved with the EMCIA and the SRCG and have worked various electronic exhibitions in the UK, Europe & USA.
